QUALICUM BEACH — The youngest councillor to sit at the Qualicum Beach council table is taking a leave of absence.

Robert Filmer, 22, announced on Thursday, Dec. 10 he’s stepping back for two months from what he claimed is a hostile work environment.

“Everyone deserves the chance to work in a safe, respectful and supportive environment,” Filmer said in a published statement. “Some of my colleagues have gone out of their way to foster an environment that is frankly toxic, unsafe, unkind and unwelcoming to those whose views and lived experiences may differ from their own.”

Idealogical divides between Filmer and other councillors were on full display during the recent St. Andrews Lodge discussions.

Contention was visible between Filmer and mayor Brian Wiese and coun. Scott Harrison.

Mayor Brien Wiese in a statement said it’s “unfortunate Councillor Filmer has characterized the conduct of Council in a negative way. I disagree with the allegations he has made and I’m disappointed that he has chosen to raise them in the manner he did.”

Harrison said he was “surprised” by Filmer’s announcement, before accusing Filmer of making incorrect statements at public meetings.

“I wish Councillor Filmer all the best and hope we can discuss his concerns as a full council when he returns from his leave.”

Filmer is the second councillor to step away from the council table.

Coun. Adam Walker resigned after a successful run to become the area’s MLA in the provincial legislature.
