Island Health posts lowest COVID-19 increase since early November

NANAIMO — Island Health has reported its lowest increase in COVID-19 numbers in three weeks.

Ten new cases were added to Island Health’s total number of cases, with 639 cases confirmed regionally throughout the pandemic. Island Health reported seven cases on Nov. 10, which was the last time daily case counts were this low.

The health authority’s number of active cases sits at 246, with 147 residing in the central Island region. A further 60 are in the south Island region with 39 to the north.

Provincially, 656 new cases were confirmed Tuesday by the BC Centre for Disease Control.

The number of active cases across B.C. fell to 8,796, a drop of around 50 from the day prior, out of nearly 34,000 cases since the start of the year.

A total of 336 people are in hospital with 76 receiving intensive or critical care. Within Island Health, seven people are in hospital, four of whom are in ICU.

Two people were in ICU within Island Health last year.

Sixteen people lost their lives as a result of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the provincial death total to 457, including six within Island Health.

On Tuesday, Island Health announced their COVID-19 testing facility had moved to Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo campus and doubled its capacity with a second drive-thru lane.
