NANAIMO — British Columbia’s COVID-19 curve continues to trend up.

A total of 998 cases across B.C. were confirmed Monday, Nov. 9 by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, including 12 in the Island Health authority.

The region now has 301 total COVID-19 cases throughout the entire pandemic. Thirty-nine are currently active with 13 in central Island Health, 18 to the south and eight to the north.

The number of active cases across B.C. also increased to 4,891.

A further 9,179 people are under daily public health monitoring across B.C., however are not considered active COVID-19 patients.

Hospitalizations also increased with 133 people receiving care, 43 in critical or intensive care units.

Five people passed away since Saturday as a result of COVID-19, bringing B.C.’s death toll to 281.

94.9 per cent of the new cases on Monday are from the Vancouver Coastal (210) and Fraser Health (737) regions, encompassing the entire Lower Mainland.

Public health recently implemented a series of restrictions and public health orders on both health authorities in a bid to curb community transmission. The restrictions focused on social gatherings, travel and sports.

“This latest action in our COVID-19 response is about putting the brakes on the virus, breaking those chains of transmission. It is a short term pause on non-essential activities and travel to ensure our essential activities like school and work and healthcare can safely continue,” Dr. Henry said.

She added evidence continued to mount that social gatherings were a key transmission source in the Lower Mainland and around the province, including in restaurants where some measures had been relaxed.

“We know that when those rules are being followed, including a maximum of six people to a table, not going and socializing, wearing masks when you’re going in common areas…those work when they’re enforced and when people are following those rules.”
