Northern section of Island Health returns to no active COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — The northern areas of Island Health are once again COVID-19 free.

Data from Island Health on Friday, Oct. 16 showed there are currently no active cases north of the Bowser/Qualicum Bay region.

Both Central Vancouver Island, which includes Nanaimo and Oceanside, and South Vancouver Island are grappling with seven active cases.

One new case was confirmed within Island Health on Friday, for a total of 240.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 155 new cases across B.C., which is in line with daily increases in recent weeks.

Slightly more than 1,500 cases are active in the province, out of 11,189 total cases since the start of the pandemic.

Dr. Henry announced one additional fatality, bringing the death toll to 251.

“There has been one new community outbreak at the Tim Hortons in Merritt. There also continue to be exposure events around the province,” Dr. Henry said in a statement.

“Let’s all do our part to protect our communities this fall and winter, no matter what we are doing. Simple steps make a big difference in keeping all of us safe.”
