NANAIMO — Island Health will head into the weekend with two new and 15 active cases of COVID-19 in the health authority.

The additions tie the highest number of active cases within Island Health when 15 were also recorded on Aug. 25. Island Health continues to account for a small fraction of total cases in B.C. with the lowest total among health regions.

Six active cases are in the central Island Health region, which includes cities such as Nanaimo and Parksville. Seven are on the south Island with the remaining two in the north.

Across the province, 1,406 cases are considered active. Of those, 68 people are in hospital, 19 of whom are receiving critical or intensive care. All of the active cases within Island Health are recovering at home.

The new cases are part of 119 new confirmed cases announced by the province on Friday, Oct. 9. It brings B.C.’s total number of cases throughout the pandemic to 10,185.

Earlier in the week, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said B.C. had begun to flatten its curve and keep a second wave manageable.

In a joint statement from the province, the message of using appropriate physical distancing and personal hygiene measures through the long weekend was reinforced.

“Let’s do all we can to protect ourselves and our loved ones from COVID-19 by ensuring we always use our layers of protection this long weekend.”

No additional COVID-19 related deaths were recorded Friday.
