Mobile home destroyed by aggressive fire, occupants escape unharmed

NANAIMO — A family home in central Nanaimo was completely destroyed by fire Saturday evening.

Fire Rescue crews were called to the 2300 block of Barclay Rd. just after 5:30 p.m. and arrived to a fully involved house fire.

Capt. Earle Ten Have said flames were coming out both sides of the modular home which made fighting the fire tricky.

“It’s in a tin can so it’s hard to get water inside when there’s metal siding all over the place, it’s tough.”

Two people were home at the time of the fire, however both were outside the building itself. One was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics.

Crews arrived to find them moving cars away from the home, an action which is discouraged by firefighters in these situations.

No other buildings were scorched by the blaze, although everything inside the home and some items just outside were lost.

“Debris and outdoor items that are by the windows and doors because it was coming out the windows and doors,” Ten Have said.

No cause for the fire has been listed.
