NANAIMO — A new team of professionals is coming to Nanaimo to help those who live with severe mental health challenges.

On Sunday, Sep. 20, the province announced six new Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams, providing 24/7 community-based support for those in need. One team will be based in Nanaimo.

Judy Darcy, minister of mental health and addictions said the six ACT teams will help people rebuild their lives.

“For many people, COVID-19 has made existing mental health struggles even worse. We’ve heard from vulnerable people and from communities that they need more specialized care for those living with really severe mental health challenges,” Darcy said.

Other teams will be set up in Duncan, Victoria, Vancouver, Maple Ridge and Kelowna.

“Getting a new ACT team in our community means more people will get the right combination of mental health supports and services,” Sheila Malcolmson, Nanaimo MLA said.

The teams will be mobile and deliver around the clock services in the community including in client homes, work, parks and those living in supportive housing or in encampments.

Services offered will differ by community but can range from crisis intervention and psychiatric treatment to medication management and family support.
