NANAIMO — A new trail network right in the City of Nanaimo will help riders of all skill levels.

A mountain bike skills park is now open near the Stevie Smith Bike Park along Labieux Rd. in central Nanaimo.

Kyle Riley, an avid mountain biker who helped with the construction of the skills park, told NanaimoNewsNOW the new park will be a great asset to the biking community.

“Rather than going out into the trails and encountering obstacles they don’t know how to ride over, they’ve got the opportunity to build the skills with repeated laps in this park.”

It features multiple runs with challenges such as three different heights of drops, rocks, jumps and plank rides.

Riley said the entire park was designed to be predictable, consistent and clear of any obstacles.

“It gives people the opportunity to crash and crash safely. There’s lots of room for error, which is something you don’t get out on the trails.”

The pump track right beside it at the Stevie Smith Bike Park is a huge draw for the community, bringing the world renowned Red Bull Pump Track World Championship series qualifier each year.
