Riders to go to the extreme at Stevie Smith Bike Park in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Upwards of 100 racers will push their bodies to the limits in Nanaimo for an international bike race.

The Red Bull Pump Track World Championship series qualifier starts on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Stevie Smith Bike Park in Beban Park.

Riders of all stripes will have to be completely in tune with their bike, their body and the course full of rolling hills and tight turns.

Michelle Corfield, founder of the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation, said pump track racing requires complete concentration.

“It’s really exciting because you get to push yourself so hard. It’s about you and the clock. You get to go and give it,” she told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The Red Bull Pump Track World Championship qualifier first visited Nanaimo in 2018.

Local rider Ben Leslie took first place and earned a free trip to the world in Switzerland. He made it to the top 16 at the championship.

This year Nanaimo is once again the only Canadian stop on the tour.

Corfield says by having Nanaimo’s name on the championship itinerary for months, the entire area is being recognized as a prime biking area.

“People are coming to understand what Nanaimo is and what we have to offer. We know having these events and giving Nanaimo the exposure is giving us the buzz in the biking community.”

Timed runs begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.
