UPDATE — BC RCMP said the stolen vehicle taken from the scene of a fatal crash in Oyster Bay on Saturday has been recovered and is being analyzed.

Police are also confident they have identified the suspect and encourage him to turn himself in.

EARLIER: LADYSMITH — Police are on the hunt and asking the community for help in finding the driver of a truck involved in a fatal crash.

An RCMP release on Saturday, Aug. 29 said the driver of a Ford F150 truck driving southbound went over the center median on the Trans-Canada Hwy for unknown reasons and hit a northbound SUV.

This happened near the Husky gas station and A&W restaurant just after 8:30 a.m.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead on scene.

Police said the driver of the F150 fled the scene on foot. It’s believed they stole a car near the scene to escape.

“Investigators are extremely concerned about the F150′ driver’s well being, as he was involved in a high speed collision and evidence at the scene suggests he’s injured,” Staff Sergeant Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP said in the release.

A traffic reconstructionist was called to assist the investigation.

The crash significantly hampered travel on the Trans-Canada Hwy. Traffic is limited to single lanes in both directions.

Anyone who has information on the driver involved or who witnessed the crash is urged to call South Island Traffic Services.
