Van Isle escapes new COVID cases as province announces nearly 50 new diagnoses

NANAIMO — 46 new COVID-19 cases have been announced by the province, but none are within the Island Health region.

A statement Tuesday from the province said 472 cases are considered active, an increase of 27 cases compared to data from the day before.

Eight people are currently in hospital across B.C. due to the virus, including five people receiving intensive care.

No new COVID related deaths were announced in the province, marking the eleventh consecutive fatality-free day as a result of the virus in B.C.

“There have been no new health-care facility outbreaks in the region. In total, seven long-term care or assisted living facilities and one acute care facility have active outbreaks,” the statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix said.

There are no COVID related health facility outbreaks on Vancouver Island, according to Island Health.

“Alerts are posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control’s website, as well as on health authority websites, providing details on where the potential exposure occurred and what actions you need to take – whether you need to immediately self-isolate or monitor for symptoms.”

Data from Island Health showed 38 cases of the virus have occurred in the central Vancouver Island region since the start of the pandemic, compared to 60 in northern Vancouver Island and 50 in the south.

A majority of diagnosed cases since late July on Vancouver Island were in the central region, an area which includes cities like Nanaimo and Parksville.
