No increase in COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island over weekend

Jul 13, 2020 | 4:10 PM

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island’s COVID-19 case count remained steady through three reporting periods over the weekend.

In total, 62 new cases since Friday, July 10, were were confirmed by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix via a statement on Monday afternoon.

None of the cases were on Vancouver Island, leaving the Island Health region with 135 total cases since March. Four are considered active.

Across B.C., 208 active cases of COVID-19 are currently being monitored by public health, 14 of whom are hospitalized.

Two additional deaths were also confirmed, both in the Vancouver region. To date, 189 people have died from COVID-19 in B.C.

The province continued to preach patience with public health measures during the summer months.

“Until a vaccine or effective treatment is available, our focus is to keep new cases low and slow,” the statement said. “To do this, all of us need to do our part, to show kindness and patience with those around us and take precautions to protect each other.”

As the weather warms, public health is also warning against larger gatherings.

Several community exposure events reported in recent weeks have been linked to larger gatherings for extended periods of time.

“Spending an extended period of time, even an evening together with a large number of people in an enclosed space, increases the likelihood that you will be exposed to someone with COVID-19.”

Two new cases were confirmed on Friday, bucking a trend of zero or one case per day the Island had seen through much of May and June.
