RDN gets its bins in a row for automated garbage rollout

NANAIMO — An implementation plan has been unveiled to transition to automated garbage collection for 30,000 mid island households.

A Regional District of Nanaimo staff report tabled at a committee meeting on Tuesday, July 7 outlined wheeled carts for garbage, recycling and organics will be delivered to 30,000 single-family households. They’re expected to be curbside between July 13 and Sept. 15.

Automated garbage collection between Cedar and Bowser, excluding the City of Nanaimo, begins on Oct. 1 when the firm Waste Connections of Canada embarks on a renewable 10-year-contract.

Information packages will accompany the waste carts when they arrive this summer, the report said.

Impacted residents earlier had the option to select preferred sizes of garbage and recycling bins, while the green food waste bin will be a universal 100 litre size.

RDN solid waste manager Larry Gardner previously told NanaimoNewsNOW annual user rates as a result of the shift to automated waste collection would rise from $154 to $175 per household in 2020 and increase based on inflation.

The RDN is currently seeking a contractor to collect and recycle old disposal bins, which people are encouraged to re-use.

Switching to automated garbage by the RDN is seen as a key plank in attaining the regional government’s goal in eventually diverting 90 per cent of waste.

More details on the RDN’s shift to automated garbage collection is available here.

The City of Nanaimo introduced automated garbage collection in 2017.
