NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island has crept upwards once again.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the new case during her daily COVID-19 media briefing on July 2.

It brings the total number of active or resolved cases on Vancouver Island to 132, with two considered active.

Dr. Henry did not say where the new case is, in keeping with the policy of not revealing which communities are affected since the beginning of the pandemic.

“The person was reported on June 30 and is a travel-related case, so not related to any outbreak or cluster,” Dr. Henry said. “As far as I understand, they had a close number of close contacts who are under quarantine now, so I don’t believe there’s any concern about travel.”

A memo confirming a case of COVID-19 at the Woodgrove Shopping Centre in north Nanaimo was sent out in error on Tuesday, June 30 by the mall’s parent company and retracted on Wednesday, July 1.

Vancouver Island remained COVID free for several weeks, with the first new active case being confirmed on June 19.

The new case on Vancouver Island was one of 24 announced by Dr. Henry on Thursday, bringing the total number of active cases to 160.

Three additional fatalities were confirmed province-wide.
