NANAIMO — British Columbia has just 153 active cases of COVID-19 as numbers remain steady over the weekend.

A total of 26 cases were detected between Friday, June 26 and Monday, June 29 including just two in the last 24 hours.

None of the new cases are in the Island Health region, leaving Vancouver Island with one active case and 131 total active or resolved cases to date.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said as phase three opens up to more interactions, how we connect with people will be critical in keeping cases low.

“No matter what your summer plans entail, where you go or where you’re from, be respectful of others by doing your part,” Dr. Henry said. “We have to remember when this virus is anywhere, the risk is everywhere.”

No new deaths were reported by the province.

The province reported on a new exposure event with three positive tests stemming from an exotic dance club in Vancouver.

Health minister Adrian Dix said the healthcare system had returned to pre-COVID levels.

The number of surgeries completed in the last week was between the normal range of 6,100 to 6,500.

Dix also noted 5,689 emergency room visits were recorded on Tuesday, June 23. It’s the highest number recorded since March 9.
