Under repair: Baston St. Bridge set for three week closure

NANAIMO — A main artery into downtown Nanaimo will temporarily close to vehicle traffic.

The Bastion St. Bridge will close to vehicle traffic on Monday, June 8 and is expected to reopen on June 26.

City crews will aim to correct an issue with the bridge joints which couldn’t be solved in time during upgrades which spanned two months in 2019.

Phil Stewart, manager of engineering projects, told NanaimoNewsNOW challenges arose in getting seals into the expansion joints of the bridge.

“We determined the flange ways that hold the seal in place had to come out and be reinstalled. It was too far into the fall to do that and have predictable warmer, dry weather so we had to delay it into the spring.”

Stewart added the problem is down to a design issue with the bridge and the same contractor who performed upgrades in 2019 will complete the project now.

The $2.3 million project is expected to remain within budget, even factoring in the additional work.

Construction on the bridge in 2019 included seismic upgrades, install new signage and resurface the bridge deck.

It was designed to squeeze more life out of the bridge, which was built in 1936 and retrofitted in 1978.
