City of Parksville green lights sport courts, outdoor rec facility re-opening

PARKSVILLE — The City of Parksville is moving ahead with plans to re-open outdoor recreation facilities.

Effective Friday, May 22, tennis courts at Springwood Park along with sport courts in Parksville Community park will open for casual, small group use.

“We’re happy to be able to open these courts for casual play, that means there won’t be any competitive tournaments, organized team play or training camps allowed at this time,” Deb Tardiff, city communications manager told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The move follows a similar announcement from the City of Nanaimo a week prior and is the first step forward in returning the region’s recreation to a new normal.

Facilities were closed in March at the height of the pandemic as local governments took steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

With the increased access comes the increased risk of exposure.

Tardiff said the city hopes facility users will continue their own preventative measures that have become common practice over the last two months.

“It really is up to the users to do what they need to do to meet requirements,” Tardiff said. “We do encourage anyone who is using these facilities to make sure they understand the guidelines set by their individual sport.”

Playground facilities in the region remain closed for the time being with both the City of Nanaimo and Parksville awaiting direction from the provincial health officer before re-opening.
