Sports courts to re-open with restrictions throughout Nanaimo area

May 13, 2020 | 3:17 PM

NANAIMO — A wide variety of sports courts are included in the first phase of returning Nanaimo to a sense of normalcy.

Tennis and pickleball courts, gated off-leash dog parks and the Stevie Smith Bike Park are set to re-open to the public on Thursday, May 14.

“Because of the community’s commitment to following the physical distancing measures outlined by the Provincial Health Officer, we are now able to begin phase one of our reopening plan,” park operations director Art Groot said in a release.

Re-opening comes with several restrictions in keeping with physical distancing.

Play on the tennis and pickleball courts are limited to singles play only, unless those on the courts are all from the same household.

Signs will be posted reminding users of the rules and the City’s park ambassadors will remain in parks to remind people of the proper way to return to the sports they love.

Sports courts throughout the Regional District of Nanaimo are also re-opening on Thursday.

Playgrounds, indoor recreation facilities and cultural venues remain closed.
