Province announces 26 new COVID-19 cases, two in the Island Health Region

NANAIMO — Over the past 24 hours, two new cases of COVID-19 have been reported on Vancouver Island.

The number of cases now stands at 123 across the Island Health region.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided a weekend update on the pandemic Saturday, May 2 from Victoria.

Dr. Henry announced 26 new cases in the province bringing the total to 2,171.

However the number of people who have fully recovered continues to grow with now 1,376 people who have fully recovered.

The province is also reporting two more deaths bringing the total to 114 people who have lost their lives to the coronavirus.

Dr. Henry took time to address students graduating this year, noting schools are working hard to make ceremonies positive and memorable.

“You are and will always be unique in the graduating class. It’s been over 100 years since we’ve had an event like this pandemic,” Dr. Henry said.

Premier John Horgan has promised to release details next week on plans to gradually lift restrictions on daily life and business.
