NANAIMO — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island did not rise on Thursday.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced there are still 120 active or recovered cases of the respiratory virus on the Island.

In the month of April, the number of confirmed cases rose from 72 to 120.

The first case on the Island was identified on March 11.

The most recent Centre for Disease Control data released Wednesday stated five patients are in Vancouver Island hospitals due to COVID-19, while none are receiving intensive care.

Thursday, April 30 marked the 100th day since the first provincial statement about COVID-19, then called the novel coronavirus, was made.

“Our lives, businesses and communities have dramatically changed in the last 100 days,” Dr. Henry told reporters during her daily news conference. “What has stayed the same is the unwavering commitment in British Columbia.”

Plans to re-open B.C. are expected to be unveiled by Premier John Horgan next week.
