NANAIMO — A young woman sustained significant injuries following a crash near the Serauxman Sports Fields.

Nanaimo RCMP and Fire Rescue responded around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28 to the intersection of Third St. and Jingle Pot Rd.

The vehicle, an older model black sedan, left the road travelling on the bend, hit a lamp post and came to a stop in the ditch.

The driver, a 22 year old Nanaimo woman, was the only person in the car. No other vehicles were involved.

“The scene was closed for several hours,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said. “We’re certainly looking at speed as a contributing factor and several other factors. The investigation continues.”

O’Brien added the skies were cloudy and the road wet at the time of the crash.

Witnesses of the crash, including a nurse, helped the woman until BC Ambulance arrived.

She was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital before being airlifted to Victoria.
