COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island make small jump over the weekend

NANAIMO — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island didn’t jump as high as it has after coming off a weekend.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Monday, April 6 there were five new COVID-19 cases in the Island Health region since her Saturday news conference. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 79 on the island.

The week before, there were seven over the same weekend time period.

Her announcement last Monday kicked off one of the slowest weeks for COVID-19 cases on the Island since the first case was confirmed on March 11.

Last week, the number of COVID-19 cases rose only slightly, from 67 on Monday, March 30 to 74 by Saturday, April 4. The number of new confirmed cases only increased three times on Vancouver Island last week.

BC Centre for Disease Control data showed 31 people on Vancouver Island had completely recovered from COVID-19 by Friday, April 3.

As of Friday, the median age of Vancouver Island cases is 54. The median age of those hospitalized is 72.

Across B.C. there are 1,266 confirmed cases with 783 people fully recovered.

Dr. Henry reiterated the need to keep social distancing in place even as the curve of new cases flattens, saying the province is not yet out of the woods during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need to keep this up. This is our time to be kind and to be safe.”

“We took a lot of measures quite early,” she said about B.C. numbers not skyrocketing like it has in other provinces.” Some parts of it are luck and some parts of it are prepared.”
