Water main break transforms Nanaimo’s Bowen Rd. into running river

NANAIMO — A water main break along one of Nanaimo’s busiest corridors snarled evening traffic on Friday, April 3.

Shortly before 7 p.m., a water main broke along Bowen Rd. near the intersection with Dufferin Cres. Water flooded the southbound lane of Bowen Rd., extending down to East Wellington Rd.

Southbound traffic was stopped and turned around near the Kirby’s Source for Sports complex, while northbound traffic was largely unaffected.

Nearby Dufferin Cres. was also inundated with water, however cars continued to brave the street.

The City of Nanaimo crews continued to assess damage Friday evening. There was visible pavement lifted along Bowen Rd. as a result of the break.

A tweet from the City asked drivers to stay away from the area, as well as more lasting impacts.

“There will be low pressure or no water in several neighbourhoods in central Nanaimo for a short period of time until we get the water shut off,” the tweet said. “Other mains will then make up the difference.”

More to come.
