COVID-19 cases confirmed on Vancouver Island rise slightly

NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases has risen again after a brief respite.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed there are now 72 confirmed cases of the respiratory virus on Vancouver Island. It’s a rise of three from 67 on both Monday and Tuesday.

Across B.C. there are now 1,066 total cases, with 606 people fully recovered and no longer requiring isolation.

Dr. Henry did confirm an additional death, bringing the death toll to 25.

“We’re holding our own,” she said during the daily press conference.

“The more committed we are right now, the less those outside of healthcare will have to do later.”

She said despite the ongoing rise in confirmed cases, health officials do have their eye on the horizon where restrictions about physical distancing don’t have to be in place. She praised the many ways people have expressed their gratitude, such as parades celebrating health care professionals and nightly cheers for hospital workers.

“We need to maintain those social connections from a distance,” she re-affirmed. “We will get through this and we will get through this together.”
