Nanaimo’s Port Theatre expansion dreams dashed after funding falls through
NANAIMO — A long-sought after expansion to downtown Nanaimo’s Port Theatre has hit a major stumbling block.
The Port Theatre Society had applied to the Investing in Community Infrastructure Program to secure funding for a $21.2 million expansion. It would add a configurable performing art space which could seat up to 240 people and also be used for rehearsals.
The City announced Wednesday, March 25 the project was not going to receive funding.
Society president Diana Johnstone said the funding program was “vastly over subscribed.”
