Second straight snow day for Nanaimo public schools

NANAIMO – Public schools in Nanaimo and Ladysmith are closed for a second straight day.

There are various private school closures in the area as well, including Aspengrove and Nanaimo Christian.

VIU closed for the morning on Jan. 16, then announced later in the day that they would be closed Thursday afternoon as crews clear snow from the campus. A decision on operations on Friday would be made early in the morning.

Sailings between Departure and Horseshoe Bay were cancelled for 6:15 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. but the Duke Point route continued running on schedule.

Nanaimo Transit continued on regular routing but passengers should be prepared for weather related delays.

BC Hydro had a few morning power outages in Nanaimo, including 600 people in the Jingle Pot area North of Westwood Lake. By mid-morning, the number of impacted customers in Nanaimo was under 150.

The City of Nanaimo also announced no garbage collection on Thursday as trucks are unable to safely navigate all the side streets in the city.
