Jan 13, 2020 | 4:13 AM

NANAIMO — Winter-like conditions have arrived on the mid island for the first time this season, leaving a blanket of snow and numerous driving related challenges.

Environment Canada doesn’t expect the Monday snowfall will be a one-off scenario. More snow is anticipated through Wednesday, Jan 15.

Below is an updated list from NanaimoNewsNOW on the key weather related impacts on the public.

LOCAL ROADS: Hilly side streets are treacherous. Numerous crashes have occurred all over Nanaimo, particularly involving hills in the south-end. Snow clearing is focused on priority and emergency routes.

The City reports the following roads are particularly challenging and should be avoided:

Fitzwilliam (Third) & Milton,
Machleary & Albert,
Comox & Highway 19 A (Old Island Highway),
Fifth & Highway 19 (Nanaimo Parkway),
Ninth & Park,
Fifth & Park and
Extension by Chase River School

Nanaimo RCMP report Westwood Rd is extremely dangerous, while their officers have responded to numerous collisions on Townsite Rd. and Stewart Ave.

AREA HIGHWAYS: Conditions are for the most part bar, with the odd slushy patch. Drive BC reports the stretch of Hwy. 4 between Parksville and the Whiskey Creek area is more challenging with slippery and slushy sections.

NANAIMO TRANSIT: As of 1:45 p.m. the Regional District reported all of their buses in Nanaimo had been restored to regular routing. Several routes had modified schedules due to adverse conditions impacting routes with hills.

GARBAGE PICK-UP: The City of Nanaimo cancelled garbage collection for the day late Monday morning. Updates on changes to the usual garbage collection routine are posted on the ‘Nanaimo Recycles’ app.

SCHOOLS: Nanaimo-Ladysmith schools and VIU are open.
