All clear given after students evacuated in Dover Bay Secondary gas leak

NANAIMO — Students at Dover Bay Secondary School were briefly evacuated due to a Thursday morning gas leak.

School District 68 reported a strong smell of gas was detected around 10:30 a.m. and students were immediately sent outside.

School District 68 announced about an hour later the school had re-opened, with the exception of upper E block, which will remain close for the remainder of the day.

The source of the gas leak had been detected and dealt with after a heavy emergency response to the school, including Fortis BC crews.

Students were temporarily sent to the sports field at neighbouring McGirr Elementary School while Dover Bay Secondary was cleared.

Burgos said gas leaks impact the safety of everybody in a given school and are taken seriously.

“Any time there is a smell of gas or something more serious, we do evacuate the school as a precaution to ensure everyone stays safe,” Burgos said.
