NANAIMO — The Clippers picked up three out of a possible four points from their games on the opening weekend of December.

On Dec. 6th they beat Salmon Arm 2-1, for their first victory over the Silverbacks since January of 2017.

Nanaimo trailed 1-0 after the first period but evened the game late in the second on a goal by newcomer Josh Kagan.

Kagan was acquired in exchange for Evan Benwell earlier in the day from the Merritt Centennials.

He arrived at the rink just in time for the game and his tally was his 20th of the season.

A Mackenzie Merriman deflection late in the third period lifted Nanaimo to a 2-1 victory, their 22nd of the season.

Dec. 7 was the annual Teddy Bear Toss game and it didn’t start well.

Nanaimo got down 2-0 early before Sean Donaldson scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal on a first period power play.

Josh Bourne scored off a face off in the third period to send the game to overtime and ensure the Clippers got a single point.

Both teams had great chances in the overtime session and both had power plays as well, but Thomas Scarfone and Nanaimo’s Zach Bennett stood tall in net.

The Eagles eventually won the game in the third round of the shootout.

The Clippers have a busy week upcoming with their next game on Dec. 11 at home to Victoria.

They visit the Q Centre to face the Grizzlies on Dec. 14 and then host Merritt on Dec. 15.

CLIP NOTES:

Ethan Scardina and Kyler Kovich are away from the team representing Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge. They have been held pointless in the tournament with Canada West sitting at 0-2.

Josh Kagan is the BCHL’s second leading goal scorer with 20.

Nanaimo has five games left before the Christmas break, four against Victoria and the other versus Merritt.

The Clippers are 7-0-0-1 on home ice since Nov. 1.
