PARKSVILLE — Oceanside is preparing for a massive influx of senior citizens over the next twenty years.

A local area profile conducted by Island Health showed approximately 7,500 residents over 75 years old are currently living in the region, a number that’s expected to double by 2038.

Senior citizens 75 or older currently make up 15.8 per cent of the Oceanside population, well above both Island Health area (10 per cent) and provincial (8 per cent) averages.

Susanna Newton from the Society of Organized Services (SOS) in Parksville told NanaimoNewsNOW they’re already seeing more demand for their programming.

“We have programs that target seniors and we’re seeing an increase needs in the seniors population accessing those programs.”

Programs include meals on wheels, medical appointment transportation and social outings.

An increase in seniors needing services and supports has already put additional pressure on services in the region.

“We’re looking at areas like nutrition, wellness, information, advocacy, transportation, social inclusion and income support,” Newton said. “We’re in all those areas already, but we recognize the needs are going to be greater.”

Newton added many seniors value independence and the ability to live in their own homes for as long as possible. Services are tailored to fulfill that wish.

“Often it is seniors who, because of health reasons are not making those healthy food choices or unable to do it (stay at home), so the programs support individuals who want to stay in their homes to maintain their independence.”

Newton identified affordable housing as a key issue for support groups in the region to focus on moving forward.
