Clippers beat Bulldogs 5-4 in a ten round shootout

NANAIMO – On a night when the Clippers honoured alumni Matt Irwin it was fitting that the scoreboard after the third period and overtime read 4-4.

Irwin’s number 44 was added to the team’s new Wall of Honour at Frank Crane Arena before the game.

It was also fitting that he got to see his old team earn the win in a matchup that went into a long shootout.

It took ten rounds, but the Clippers did beat the Bulldogs 5-4.

Nanaimo built up a 4-1 lead and survived a furious Alberni Valley comeback to grab the victory.

The Clippers Mackenzie Merriman and the Dogs Mitchell Deelstra traded first period goals before Nanaimo came out and took over the game in the second frame.

Tim Washe with a shorthanded goal, Tyler Williams, and Sean Donaldson vaulted the Clippers into a 4-1 40 minute lead.

Alberni owned the third however with a first minute goal by Grayson Valente, and two goals by Ryan Doolin, including a last minute marker with an extra attacker.

Overtime solved nothing and the shootout took ten rounds to complete.

It was the longest Clipper shootout since the BCHL brought them back into the game last season.

Liam Ryan, Mackenzie Merriman, and Kyler Kovich all scored in the long shootout with Kovich snapping a shot by Luke Pearson in round ten to win it.

Jordan Naylor got the win for the Clippers, upping his record to 10-1 on the season.

Nanaimo is now on a five game winning streak heading into another divisional game on Friday in Victoria.

It will be the third time in four games the Clippers have faced the Grizzlies.
