School district warns of potential attempted abduction at Brechin Elementary

NANAIMO — RCMP are searching for a woman who allegedly approached two girls on a playground at Brechin Elementary.

RCMP Sgt. Jon Stuart told NanaimoNewsNOW the incident occurred on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 1:45 p.m. at the school following a disagreement between a student at the school and her younger sister.

“An unknown female approached the playground and told the older child she could leave the younger child with her,” Stuart said.

The girls immediately recognized a potential danger and left the playground to report the incident to school staff.

The woman was described as professional, in a black dress with red cardigan and grey high-heeled shoes. She had dark hair pulled back in a bun and fled the scene in a grey, two-door vehicle parked on Northumberland Avenue.

School district communications director Dale Burgos said the girls responded perfectly.

“Kudos to the children for getting all these details in a situation like that. It’s really important, but it’s something the School district does, having these conversations with students on a regular basis that it’s important to let adults know right away when something like this happens.”

The situation was confirmed to parents via a letter on Tuesday evening.

RCMP are now investigating the incident and requesting witnesses or those with knowledge of the incident to come forward.

“Perhaps this is a misunderstanding of circumstances,” Stuart said. “We’d like (the woman involved) to come forward and tell us what transpired.”
