Conservative John Hirst has lost his second race in six months to Paul Manly, however struck a positive and constructive tone in his concession speech to a crowd of supporters at the Nanaimo Golf Club.

Paul Manly has delivered his second victory speech in six months, as he has claimed the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding ahead of John Hirst and Bob Chamberlin.

Green party incumbent Paul Manly has won his first full term in parliament by winning Nanaimo-Ladysmith in the 2019 Election. Manly held off a strong challenge from John Hirst and Bob Chamberlin. He will join at least 2 other Green MP’s in parliament.

In Courtenay-Alberni, NDP incumbent Gord Johns has won a second term in Ottawa, fending off a challenge from Conservative Byron Horner.

Polls are beginning to report their numbers to Elections Canada in Nanaimo-Ladysmith. With a handful of polls reporting, it is a tight race between the four major party candidates. Paul Manly currently leading over John Hirst and Bob Chamberlin.

NanaimoNewsNOW reporters Ian Holmes and Spencer Sterritt are in the field at the various campaign watch parties in the city as the main party candidates watch results come down.

7:35 p.m. – Results begin to trickle in
Vote tallies from neighbouring ridings are beginning to come in, however no polls are being reported in Nanaimo-Ladysmith.

In Courtenay-Alberni, NDP incumbent Gord Johns out to an early lead over the Liberals Jonah Gowans. Rachel Blaney of the NDP also leading in North-Island Powell River.

7:25 p.m. – Projections indicate Liberal minority
Several media outlets are projecting Justin Trudeau will be the Prime Minister for another team under a Liberal minority government. Focus now shifting towards the secondary races and how much support the NDP, Bloc and Greens can garner.

7:15 p.m. – Local candidates watch results come in
The four major party candidates are in position and awaiting results in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding. Paul Manly is joined by supporters at the Canalloti Lodge, Bob Chamberlin is at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel. John Hirst has a campaign party at the Nanaimo Golf Club, while Michelle Corfield is at her office on Boundary Cres.

Vote tallies from the riding aren’t expected to come in for a while yet.

Polls are now closed across the country, with BC the final place to cast ballots. The Liberals have taken an early lead federally with strong results to date in both Quebec and Ontario.

5:00 p.m. – Quiet election day nearing its end
A quiet, rainy election day draws to a close with two hours remaining to vote. Polls close at 7 p.m. with no reports of complications or issues at any polling place locally. All major federal party leaders cast their ballots earlier in the day or during advanced polls.

12:00 p.m. – Advanced voting numbers soar
Elections Canada reports almost 25,000 advanced ballots were cast in Nanaimo-Ladysmith over Thanksgiving, an increase almost double that of the national rate.

Polls are open across British Columbia for the 2019 Federal Election. In Nanaimo-Ladysmith, incumbent MP Paul Manly from the Green party is seeking his first full term in office after winning the May by-election. He is facing eight challenges including Bob Chamberlin (NDP), James Chumsa (COM), Jennifer Clarke (PPC), Michelle Corfield (LIB), John Hirst (CON), Brian Marlatt (PC), Geoff Stoneman (IND) and Echo White (IND).
