Clippers winning streak ends with 4-1 loss in Trail

TRAIL – The Clippers lost the battle of the two teams with the longest BCHL win streaks on Friday night.

The Smoke Eaters won their ninth straight game by a 4-1 score, and ended Nanaimo’s seven game streak in the process.

Braden Costello opened the scoring with a breakaway goal in the first period before Josh Bourne tied it 1-1 midway through the second.

The turning point in the game was 56 seconds after Bourne’s goal.

Liam Freeborn finished a three way passing play to give Trail the lead back, and then Costello scored again three minutes later to provide some insurance.

An empty netter in the final minute by Tyler Ghirardosi was the only other goal of the night.

Bourne’s goal extended his point streak to nine games, but it was a difficult night for Nanaimo’s offense to find traction.

Zach Bennett made 27 saves for the Clippers with the shots finishing 35-28 in favour of Trail.

It was the first Nanaimo loss since Sept. 22 and their next game is against the club that handed them that loss, the Penticton Vees.

The Clippers will look to avenge a 4-3 decision when they travel to Penticton for a 6 p.m. game Oct. 19.
