PRINCE GEORGE – It was a story book ending for the Clippers in a 5-4 shootout win over the Spruce Kings.

Sean Donaldson scored the winner in the fifth round against his former team.

Ex Clipper Preston Brodziak opened the scoring in the first period for the host Kings, but a pair of goals by Kyler Kovich gave Nanaimo a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Kovich’s goals were his fourth and fifth of the season, his second was on the man advantage.

Nanaimo’s Josh Bourne ripped home a one-timer just after a power play had expired in the second period. However, goals just over a minute apart by the Spruce Kings’ Finn Williams and Corey Cunningham drew the game even heading to the third frame.

Scott Mahovlich put the Clippers in front early in the final period, only to have Cunningham even the game with just over a minute left while Travis Walton was served a controversial five-minute major penalty.

That set the stage for a scoreless three-on-three overtime and ultimately the shootout.

Clipper’s goaltender Jordan Naylor stopped all five shots and Donaldson scored the only goal against Prince George netminder Jett Alexander.

Prince George outshot Nanaimo 39-31 in the contest.

Nanaimo’s win was their fifth consecutive and improved their record to 7-3-0-1.

After Friday’s action the Clippers stood in second place in the Island Division.

The Clippers will finish their road trip with games in Merritt Oct. 12 and Langley Oct. 13.
