NANAIMO — Week three of the BCHL season was as busy off the ice as it was at the rink.

The Clippers added forward Julien Menes in a future considerations trade with Wenatchee on Wednesday.

Menes is a big body forward who spent last year at St. Paul’s School where he scored 25 points in 28 games.

Nanaimo also got goalie Jordan Naylor back from the injured reserve and moved fellow netminder Blake Wood to Victoria.

Naylor got his first start of the year in Alberni Valley on Sept. 21 and gave Nanaimo a solid outing despite a 2-1 loss.

Travis Walton scored the Clippers only goal of the contest on a late third period man advantage.

The Bulldogs had goals from Mitchell Deelstra in each of the first two periods to build up a 2-0 lead.

On Sunday Sept. 22 Penticton paid a visit to Frank Crane Arena and the Clippers and Vees put on a great show.

After an early goal by the Vees Tristan Amonte, the Clippers got a tying marker off the stick of defenceman Robby Drazner to tie the game.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period.

Travis Walton scored shorthanded, then Danny Weight notched an equalizer, and Sean Donaldson’s first goal with Nanaimo gave the Clippers a 40 minute lead.

A third period push allowed the Vees to gain momentum and score twice.

A goal by Carson Kosobud and a highlight reel effort from Danny Weight nailed down the win.

Clippers coach Darren Naylor was disappointed in the loss but felt there was growth in certain areas of execution.

“We put pucks in deep, we were recovering pucks. But we need to bare down on our chances. We’re a big team and we’re physical. We need to play like that.”

The Clippers have a 2-3-0-1 record and have been in five one goal games.

Their only two goal loss was padded with an empty net goal against, so it’s essentially six one goal contests to start the season.

Nanaimo’s identity seems to be as a defense first team, but there’s a belief that the offense will come around and boost the clubs win total.

The Clippers focus this week will be on their lone opponent – the Powell River Kings.

Powell River comes to Frank Crane Arena on Sept. 29 as the two clubs renew their island rivalry for the first time since the Kings ended Nanaimo’s playoff run this past March.

CLIP NOTES:

Travis Walton is the Clippers goal leader with four, and is currently riding a five game point streak.

The Clippers and Kings have faced each other in the playoffs five of the past six years. Nanaimo won the 2015 and 2016 Island Championship series.
