Parents are top school zone speed violators in Nanaimo: RCMP

NANAIMO — RCMP are concerned about just who is going too fast through school zones during the first half of September.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien reports 22 fines issued so far with a sad trend emerging of parents being the prime offenders.

“They’ve dropped off kids and now they’re losing focus and continued onto their next event, but they’re speeding through school zones,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said some parents forget to slow down immediately after transporting their kids to school.

O’Brien is “cautiously optimistic” since the overall number of school zone speeders in the Nanaimo area is down compared to Septembers in the past.

O’Brien said enforcement will remain a priority for the detachment’s traffic division around schools for the next few months.

“Our objective is to change the behaviour so it continues throughout the year.”

The school zone speed limit is 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when classes are in session.

Fines start at $196.
