NANAIMO – The Clippers scored two quick goals at the start of the second period to take control of their matinee game with Chilliwack.

After a scoreless first period Kyler Kovich and Tyler Williams scored in the first four and a half minutes of the second to give Nanaimo control of the game.

A power play goal midway through the second frame by Kyle Penney kept the game tight but the Clippers never relinquished the lead.

In the last minute of the third Ethan Scardina scored an empty netter, and then the Chiefs added a goal with just two seconds left by Arlo Merritt to make the final score 3-2.

The victory was the first as a Clipper for hometown goalie Blake Wood who stopped 26 shots.

Rookie 16-year-old Jack O’Brien also had his first BCHL point with an assist on Williams second period goal.

The Clippers took five of six points over the weekend by beating Alberni Valley 2-1 Friday, falling in a shootout 3-2 to the Bulldogs Saturday, and winning Sunday’s game 3-2 over the Chiefs.

Nanaimo played without defenceman Aiden Hansen-Bukata in the Chilliwack game and also lost forward Cade Cavallini to injury.

Next up the Clippers visit Alberni Valley again on Sept. 21 and return home for a matinee versus Penticton on Sept. 22.
