PORT ALBERNI – The Clippers built up a 2-0 lead but lost 3-2 to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in a shootout Saturday.

Robby Drazner’s point shot game the Clippers a 1-0 lead after the first period and Josh Bourne’s power play marker upped the advantage to 2-0 in the second.

But a late second period tally by the Bulldogs Tommy Bannister gave the home side some life heading into the intermission.

Bannister scored again early in the third before the goalies shut the door.

Zach Bennett made 32 saves in the Nanaimo net including four in overtime and two in the shootout, while his counterpart Luke Pearson stopped 32 as well.

After a frenetic three on three OT the game came down to the third round of the shootout.

Jacob Bosse scored for the Bulldogs and Josh Bourne went high on his last chance to tie the game.

The victory was Alberni Valley’s first of the season after dropping their first three games on the road.

Nanaimo is 1-1-0-1 heading into a 2 p.m. game Sunday Sept. 14 at home to Chilliwack.

The Clippers had to play most of the game with five defenseman after Aiden Hansen-Bukata left the game early in the first period.

There was no update on his status after the game.
