Driver who crossed road at Cameron Lake dies in late Sunday crash

PORT ALBERNI — A woman in her 50’s has passed away after a serious crash on Hwy. 4 near Cameron Lake.

Officers with Central Island Traffic Services confirmed the female driver of a westbound car crossed the road near Cameron Lake and crashed into an eastbound pickup truck around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.

The accident snarled late-night traffic for several hours. Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake was closed until roughly 4 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9.

Traffic Services continues to investigate the crash which happened on slick, winding roads.

A second weather-related accident happened the same night as a driver pulled out of the Arlington Inn on Hwy. 19 in Nanoose Bay.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said the driver didn’t leave enough time when turning onto the highway and was hit by an oncoming car.

He cautioned drivers to stay safe by driving to the available conditions, which unfortunately is something officers rarely see as fall rains begin.

“I myself was driving home at that time of night with my boys in the car and I was surprised to see how fast everyone was driving,” Foreman said. “It was like they weren’t at all concerned about the rain at the time.”

Foreman said people not driving to the conditions and being unaware of the slick roads is a “frequent problem.”
