Clippers drop home opener 2-0 to Cowichan Valley

NANAIMO – The Clippers fell 2-0 to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in game one of the BCHL season.

An excellent crowd of 1479 watched a very defensive game that didn’t see a goal until mid way through the second period.

Josh Kagan scored the winning goal on a quick shot from the right side that got by Clipper starter Zach Bennett.

In the opening twenty minutes the most notable moment was a five minute blow to the head major penalty and game misconduct given to the Capitals Tanner Sidaway.

Nanaimo’s Jack O’Brien left the game after taking the hit, but was able to come back in the second period.

The Clippers had chances but were stymied by a great effort in goal from the Capitals Zach Borgiel.

He made 35 saves and was named the game’s first star.

Two of Nanaimo’s Grade A opportunities did not count for shots, those being a drive off the cross bar by Tim Washe in the second period and a third period goal post from Sean Donaldson.

Bennett made a highlight reel save on what looked to be a tap in from Will Arquiett in the third period that gave the Clippers a chance for a late comeback but an empty netter in the final minute by Andy Bridgewater secured the win for the visitors.

The Clippers are off until Sept. 13 when they have a home game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

They’ll also visit Alberni Valley on Sept. 14 before returning home to host Chilliwack Sept. 15.
