Landfill diversion key for annual reuse event

NANAIMO — An annual event aiming to limit landfill waste hits Nanaimo streets this weekend.

Reuse Rendezvous is Nanaimo’s longest running reuse event where residents are encouraged to part with good condition items that may be destined for the dump.

Charlotte Davis, recycling manager for the City of Nanaimo told NanaimoNewsNOW, the response from residents is always positive.

“The idea is that people put out their useable and unwanted goods at curbside and people can then drive around the city and find some treasures.”

Popular items include furniture, tools, clothing, sporting goods and toys.

Items should be marked with a ‘free’ tag and set out by Saturday, Aug. 10. Unclaimed items are to be removed by Monday, Aug 12.

Recycling items and diverting from the landfill is a key part of the city’s environmental sustainability strategy.

“Many people have things in their homes that don’t need to be landfilled, they can just be given away and other people can love them.”

This is the second year Reuse Rendezvous has taken place in August. Prior events occurred in the spring, however unpredictable weather often deterred bargain hunters.
