New $4M fire hall approved for Dashwood Volunteer Fire Dept.

NANAIMO — Volunteer firefighters north of Qualicum Beach will have a new home away from home.

The replacement project for the 35-year-old Dashwood Fire Hall was officially approved on Friday, July 26.

The new, larger facility will have expanded bays for firetrucks and improved radio communication capabilities.

Previous studies by the Regional District of Nanaimo showed adding amenities and capabilities onto the existing building north of Qualicum Beach wouldn’t be possible from an engineering standpoint.

The project was handled with the alternative approval process, which required 10 per cent of area taxpayers to document their disapproval of the project.

Nine forms were received from an eligible population of nearly 1,800.

The Regional District will now borrow up to $4 million, to be repaid within 25 years.

The project is expected to cost taxpayers with areas F, G and H roughly $220 a year.
