SFN breaks ground on first gas station

NANAIMO — The initial work is underway to build the first gas station owned and operated by Snuneymuxw First Nation.

A ceremonial shovel was used by SFN councillors and Elders on Thursday, July 18 to kickoff the project.

Chief Mike Wyse said the development will be a major boost for the small community south of Nanaimo.

“Every other community has their own gas station that provides service to their people. This is going to be Snuneymuxw’s gas bar.”

It will be overseen by Petroglyph Development Group, which handles economic development for SFN.

Wyse said the gas station, located only a few miles away from the Duke Point BC Ferries terminal, will be accessible to all and is hoped to be a significant financial generator for the area.

The land beside the under-construction health centre will be cleared in coming days.

Wyse expected the gas station will be open within several months.
