1 of 3 cruise ships visiting Nanaimo forced to cancel

NANAIMO — The last cruise ship to arrive in Nanaimo for the 2019 season unfortunately won’t be making a visit to the harbour city.

The Silver Explorer was one of only three cruise ships scheduled to visit Nanaimo. It was to dock on July 11, the same day as the much larger Azamara Quest.

However, the cruise ship was damaged after being entangled with nets in the Bering Sea on route from Alaska.

“This cancellation is unfortunate for Nanaimo businesses and tourism operators, but also for the passengers who won’t get to visit our beautiful city on this trip,” Karen Bannister with Tourism Vancouver Island said in a release.
