Garbage truck repairs cause pickup delays around Nanaimo

Jun 6, 2019 | 8:01 AM

NANAIMO — A pair of garbage trucks going down at the same time has left bins out and waiting along the curb.

David Thompson, manager of sanitation, recycling and public works with the City of Nanaimo, said numerous routes were impacted after two trucks were out of service for three days.

“Those trucks are back on the road (as of Thursday) and we’re working to get caught up.”

He said their crews work in the evenings and sometimes weekends when collection dates aren’t met. Any updates about delays are sent out to residents through the Nanaimo Recycles app.

In recent weeks, many people have reached out to NanaimoNewsNOW or online expressing frustration about garbage pickup delays.

“We’ve had significant growth and new collection points in the last year. It’s an increase beyond what we had anticipated,” Thompson said.

A new truck is expected to hit Nanaimo streets in 2020.

It will join a fleet of eight garbage and recycling trucks, as well as a backup vehicle.
