Nanaimo child molester sentenced to 3 years in prison

NANAIMO — After taking advantage of a 10-year-old girl for more than a year, a disgraced Nanaimo man will spend the next three years in a federal prison.

Shane Rodocker was sentenced at provincial court in Nanaimo on Tuesday, May 21. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault against a 10-year-old between September 2017 and October 2018. He was first arrested in October, 2018.

After being given credit for time already served in custody, Rodocker will spend two-and-a-half years in a federal prison.

Many details of the case are protected under a publication ban to protect the victim’s identity.

Judge Alexander Wolf told Rodocker his actions “have affected the family and this young person for the rest of their lives. I appreciate there are consequences you will suffer as a result which will affect your life, but when we’re talking about the abuse of a child…you have breached (any) trust.”

Wolf said he hopes the guilty plea, preventing the need for a trial, will some day bring a sense of closure to the family, though he said it can never erase the trauma inflicted by Rodocker.

The mother of the girl who was repeatedly molested submitted a victim impact statement to the court. Wolf said Rodocker should read and study it to hopefully understand how his actions irrevocably harmed the family.

The three-year-sentence was a joint submission from the Crown and defence.

The submission included a stay of proceedings of several other charges against Rodocker.

Judge Wolf said his sentence “would be very different if he was pleading guilty to forcible confinement, a break-and-enter or an assault, if that in fact did take place while he was bound by the terms of a recognizance.”

Rodocker will be under numerous conditions when released from prison, including no-contact orders and restrictions against being in public spaces, as well as being entered into the sex offender registry.

He was silent throughout his sentencing hearing and didn’t provide any statements to the court.
