Safety net installed after rocks fall from Sugarloaf Mountain
NANAIMO — Wire mesh installed to prevent rocks from tumbling down Nanaimo’s Sugarloaf Mountain Park onto properties below makes Deana Baumel feel more safe and secure in her home.
The King Richard Dr. resident, who lives directly below the popular viewpoint, told NanaimoNewsNOW a large boulder crashed down into her neighbour’s property last year and smaller rocks have fallen into her yard.
She said she’s pleased with the new safety device covering several large boulders and smaller rocks encased into the mountain’s northeast face.
“There’s probably two or three homes that are potentially impacted, but with the meshing it’s going to solve any future problems I believe. It’s a good thing,” Baumel said.
