Hammer thrower Katzberg latest Nanaimo athlete to win gold at national event

NANAIMO — Ethan Katzberg has been golden at his last two track and field events.
The 15-year-old John Barsby student won a gold medal and set a meet record in the hammer throw at the National Youth Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
His personal best distance of 61.54 metres broke the previous championship record of 59.44m.
The win for Katzberg follows a first place showing at the BC Athletics Jamboree in July.
Ethan’s older sister Jessica (17) also performed well at nationals with a fourth place finish.
She earned her way on to Team BC with a silver medal at the Jamboree.
The nationals wrapped up at the same time as the Canada Summer Games.
At the Summer Games, Team BC won 146 medals the most ever for a team from our province.
That was good enough for second place in the overall standings behind Ontario.
Two of those gold medals featured athletes from Nanaimo.
Isaac Bevis and Jeff Webb won the gold in pairs beach volleyball, while Riley Knight and her partner from North Vancouver won the female lightweight double sculls rowing event.
Five other athletes from the mid island were a part of Team BC as well.
Isaac Sandri had a strong games with a fourth place showing in javelin, and Miryam Bassett finished 10th in the women’s 1500 metre race.
On the diamond Josh Laukkanen was a part of BC’s fifth place entry in baseball, and Charlie Andrews was on the softball team that finished ninth.
Lantzville’s Cameron Antifave participated in three kayak events and placed fourth in the K-4 1000m, sixth in the K-4 200m, and eighth in the K-2 200m.
