Nanaimo Port Authority encouraged by rising cargo shipments

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Port Authority (NPA) says they’re seeing continual increases in goods coming and going from the harbour.

Vice president Ian Marr told NanaimoNewsNOW the NPA’s shipping businesses at Duke Point and the Assembly Wharf, as well as their industrial partners, have seen steady growth over the last several years.

“Containerization has been a very good driver for us and has been moving forward quite rapidly,” Marr said. “We’re working with our partner DP World to increase that business and make it sound.”

International container shipments at the NPA’s Duke Point Deep Sea Dock started in 2012 and have grown every year since. Forty-three thousand tonnes of imported and exported international container goods were recorded last year.
